The Pro-Vulter, so to speak, said that it's in no way racist and just based on Crusades alone. I'm still formulating how I feel about it, but I admit the meme's always sat a little oddly with me, especially when the only context I see it used so heavily is usually rapidly followed by 'Saracen hordes' and the like.
Do you think the whole screaming 'DEUS VULT!' is a little gross? Maybe not necessarily racist (or maybe so), but just sort of tasteless? Partially because of videogames, but not really related enough to post it there I think. I'm a little torn, as I think both of my friends made some good points. I suspect the problem is bigger in Europe because a lot of europeans feel closer to the idea of crusaders than a lot of Americans who might see the great frontier western cowboy era as their nostalgic period of reminiscent cool strong hero dudes.I had a convo with a couple of friends on this earlier and thought I'd get ERA's input on it. The bad crusaders where just a few rogue individuals. Noble knights who just wanted to guard the passageways to the holy lands and protect the pilgrims. I think it's because they were bad ass looking skilled fighters, and as a result a lot of people in Europe have a need to have these guys be the good guys.
Crusaders have a special bias for many european history buffs that the Inquisitors don't.
I've talked to more than a few people who become very hostile when the subject gets to the bad stuff Crusaders did. But I've seen Deus Vult memes following Kingdom of Heaven Director Cut.Īnd on that note, not having necessarily anything to do with alt-right or nazis, there are many people in Europe who have very protective ideas about the Crusaders being good guys. It has a overlap with Rome Total War "fucking plebs" / "catapult" memes. I've seen Deus Vult memes going back several years.
